Who is this programme for?
Designed for engineering and engineering-technology graduates and working professionals seeking specialist knowledge in corrosion assessment, prevention, monitoring, materials selection and asset integrity. It is particularly relevant to professionals in energy, oil and gas, utilities, manufacturing and infrastructure.
What will I learn, year by year?
Year 1: Build foundations in corrosion science, engineering materials, corrosion control, monitoring, cathodic protection, coatings, failure analysis and inspection. Choose specialist electives such as pipeline, oilfield, MIC or high-temperature corrosion. Complete Research Methodology, Data Analytics and Project Management. Final stage: Undertake Industrial-Based Projects I & II involving an industry-related experiment, simulation or corrosion-failure investigation.
Where do graduates work? Name employers and roles (≤60 words)
Graduates can pursue roles in corrosion engineering, asset integrity, inspection, materials engineering, failure analysis, R&D and technical consulting across upstream/downstream oil and gas, power, utilities, manufacturing and infrastructure. UTP identifies opportunities in upstream, downstream, power, consulting/testing, manufacturing, academia and R&D.
One thing that makes it different at UTP
UTP describes it as a one-of-a-kind Corrosion Engineering programme in Southeast Asia, combining industry-oriented modular programmes, an industry network and access to specialised on-campus corrosion laboratory facilities while allowing students to study 100% online.
The Research Behind It: Which area, centre and academics?
Corrosion engineering/materials degradation and asset integrity, supported by UTP’s Centre for Corrosion Research (CCR). Research areas include oilfield corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, corrosion inhibitors, materials failure, protective coatings and multiphase-flow corrosion. Academics include Dr Kee Kok Eng, AP Dr A Rahim Othman, Dr Mazli Mustapha, Dr Saeid Kakooei and CCR researchers.
Cost & Funding: Which scholarships and aid apply to this programme?
UTP’s current postgraduate financial-aid information indicates that GA/GRA are for postgraduate research students, so they do not apply to this programmework ODL programme. Malaysian programmework students may use the EPF Withdrawal Scheme where eligible. Applicants should also check UTP’s Financial Aid Directory for external sponsorships/loans applicable to their circumstances.
Student Life: What should an applicant to this programme know?
This is a 100% online programme designed around working professionals. Students use online self-instructional materials, have 8 hours of live online sessions per programme per semester, with classes held after working hours/over weekends. Students can study at their own pace and may watch recorded sessions.
Next Intake + Application Deadline
January 2027 intake — 21 December 2026 deadline for Malaysian applicants. UTP lists the next Malaysian postgraduate programmework intake as January 2027, with registration on 4 January 2027. Dates are subject to change
Placement or internship route for this programme
No conventional internship is specified. Instead, students complete Industrial-Based Project I & II. For ODL students, the project can be an experiment/simulation or corrosion-failure investigation closely related to their professional work, allowing them to integrate workplace problems into the project.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I study while working?
Yes. ODL is designed around work commitments and offers self-paced learning with classes after working hours/over weekends.
How is the industry project done online?
It can involve an experiment, simulation or corrosion-failure investigation related to your professional field.
How long does it take?
Students can complete it in 12–36 months depending on study pace and workload.
