Who is this programme for?
Designed for young graduates and industry professionals seeking advanced expertise in petroleum geoscience, exploration, reservoir characterisation, geophysics and subsurface risk assessment for the oil and gas industry.
What will I learn, year by year?
Semester 1: Study basin and structural dynamics, sedimentology, stratigraphy, petroleum systems and basin modelling. Semester 2: Develop skills in applied geophysics, formation evaluation, petrophysics and subsurface risking while beginning the industrial project. Semester 3: Choose two specialisations—advanced seismic, computational geophysics, reservoir modelling or reservoir engineering—and complete the industrial project and data analytics.
Where do graduates work? Name employers and roles (≤60 words)
Graduates can pursue roles such as Petroleum Geoscientist, Geologist, Geophysicist and Geotechnical Consultant, particularly within oil and gas exploration, reservoir characterisation and subsurface evaluation.
One thing that makes it different at UTP
The programme combines industry-developed curriculum, geological fieldwork, computer programming, real industry projects and specialist geoscience expertise, with modules taught by academics and industry experts.
The Research Behind It: Which area, centre and academics?
Research is supported by the Centre for Subsurface Imaging (CSI) and South-East Asia Clastic & Carbonate Research Laboratory (SEACARL). Areas include subsurface imaging, seismic technology, basin analysis, reservoir characterisation, rock physics, carbonate and clastic studies. Key academic: Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Abdul Halim Abdul Latiff.
Cost & Funding: Which scholarships and aid apply to this programme?
GA is for PhD students only. GRA is research-oriented and should not be presented as funding for this programmework programme. Malaysian students can explore applicable EPF withdrawal, external sponsorships and education financing.
Student Life: What should an applicant to this programme know?
Offered full-time in conventional or ODL mode. The programme is modular, with technical modules typically delivered over 2–3 weeks, making it suitable for working professionals. ODL delivery is 100% online.
Next Intake + Application Deadline
January, May, September. For January 2027, the current Malaysian postgraduate application deadline is 21 December 2026; registration is scheduled for 4 January 2027.
Placement or internship route for this programme
Includes a 4-month Individual Industrial Project II. Projects are industry-provided and may cover basin evaluation, reservoir modelling, seismic technology, prospect maturation or non-seismic techniques.
