Who is this programme for?

For engineers, researchers and technology professionals who want to conduct original research in electrical and electronics engineering and develop advanced solutions in energy, electronics, communications, automation, robotics or embedded systems.

What will I learn, year by year?

Year 1: Establish the research problem, complete Research Methodology and develop/defend the research proposal.

Research stage: Conduct independent research, analyse/validate findings and produce scholarly publications.

Final stage: Complete the thesis, Research Completion Seminar and Viva Voce.

Research progression depends on the topic, methodology and candidate.

Where do graduates work? Name employers and roles

Career pathways include research scientist, lecturer, consultant, product development specialist and innovation specialist. UTP's EEE industry network includes PETRONAS, Intel, Infineon, Huawei, Siemens, TNB, MIMOS, Schlumberger and Yokogawa, among others. These are industry collaborators, not necessarily graduate employers.

One thing that makes it different at UTP

Strong industry-connected, multidisciplinary research, with six specialisation areas spanning power and renewable energy, power electronics, embedded systems, telecommunications, instrumentation/control, and robotics/automation.

The Research Behind It: Which area, centre and academics?

Research clusters: Intelligent Signal & Imaging; Pervasive System; Communication; Electronic Material & Devices; Automation & Control System; Power & Energy Systems. Core research areas: Power Systems & Renewable Energy; Power Electronics & Electrical Drives; Electronics & Embedded Systems; Telecommunications & Signal Processing; Instrumentation & Control; Robotics & Automation. Relevant academics should be matched to the applicant's topic through the EEE staff directory.

Cost & Funding: Which scholarships and aid apply to this programme?

UTP Graduate Assistantship (GA): full-time PhD research students; tuition + first-attempt Research Methodology; RM3,000/month. Minimum CGPA 3.25/4.00. Students remain responsible for resource/semester fee, Viva, registration, accommodation and transportation. GRA: similar tuition/methodology coverage with allowance based on grant availability. EPF withdrawal and eligible employer-sponsored HRDF support also apply.

Student life: What should an applicant to this programme know?

A research-intensive programme with access to specialist engineering software and tools including MATLAB/Simulink, ANSYS, LabVIEW, Cadence, PSpice, Proteus, Altair and industrial automation platforms. Students work within a postgraduate community with domestic and international researchers and can collaborate across departments and with external organisations.

Next Intake + Application Deadline

Next intake: January 2027. UTP lists January, May and September intakes. General programme application deadline: To confirm with CGS. For GA funding, the January intake deadline is the 1st week of October 2026.

Placement or internship route for this programme

Research attachment opportunities are available through supervisors using research grants. The programme also has extensive industry collaboration with organisations including PETRONAS, Intel, Infineon, Huawei, Siemens, TNB, MIMOS and Yokogawa. Any attachment/internship is dependent on the research project, supervisor, funding and partner.
