Who is this programme for?

For curious, hands-on learners who want to understand the earth, explore energy and mineral resources, experience fieldwork and global exposure, work with industry technologies and AI, and solve real-world challenges in energy, resources and the environment.

What will I learn, year by year?

During the early years, students build a strong foundation in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, Earth processes and mathematics, with compulsory fieldwork each year and opportunities for community engagement. As they progress, students explore energy geoscience, strategic minerals, geospatial technology and Earth resources while gaining hands-on experience with industry-standard software, AI, machine learning and data science. In the later years, students gain industry experience and tackle real-world challenges through capstone and research projects, while having the opportunity to specialise through field electives in Petroleum Geoscience or Basin Studies, preparing them for careers in a rapidly evolving geoscience industry.

Where do graduates work?

UTP Geoscience graduates work across PETRONAS/PETRONAS Carigali, SLB, Shell, Halliburton, Baker Hughes, geoscience and geophysical consultancies, and research/academia, in roles such as Geoscientist, Geologist, Geophysicist, Reservoir Geologist/Geophysicist, Petrophysicist, Exploration Geologist, Well Construction Field Engineer, Geomatics and Research.

One thing that makes it different at UTP

At UTP, Geoscience goes beyond conventional Earth science. We combine geoscience expertise with technology, AI, advanced sensing and real industry challenges, connecting education, research and industry to develop solutions for energy transition, resource development and environmental sustainability.

Testimonial

2019 Graduate

Chong Jing Ting

Currently working as Senior Software Engineer at Viridien; “My experience in UTP Petroleum Geoscience programme was challenging yet rewarding. It gave me the opportunity to broaden my knowledge beyond classes and labs, with regular field trips and industrial exposures. UTP’s strong collaboration with industrial partners also provides students with great exposures and learning experiences.”

Target: Straight A SPM / IGCSE

2020 Graduate

Roodra Manogaran

Postdoctoral Research Associate at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center/University of Maryland, Baltimore County; “I would recommend anyone to go for a student exchange programme as it was the best experience I ever had in my life. Thanks to Yayasan UTP and the geosciences department, I was able to complete my study abroad programme in MST. The amount of growth and maturing that happens when you study abroad is amazing. I feel it has been one of the most significant attributes to my undergraduate career and personal growth during the last few years.”

2020 Graduate

Ain Natasha Mohd Nasir

Engineer – Process Data SSW at Shell

““Internship period was one of the remarks on my life board. I did my 7-months internship with PETRONAS Carigali Sdn. Bhd. (PCSB) where it really thrives me a whole new knowledge on geological operations which involves Petroleum Engineering terms which I was not familiar to however this experience of internship really drives me to get into a picture of industrial work and I did enjoy the whole internship period. “

2016 Graduate

Grandika S. Primadani

Principal Analyst, Asia Pacific – International Plays & Basins, S&P Global

“The petroleum geoscience program at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) is excellent preparation for careers in geosciences and other earth science-related professions. During my study in UTP, I was fortunate to have gone through the modules, namely sedimentology and stratigraphy, seismic interpretation, and basin analysis which actually helped me in the integration of geological and geophysical data at the scale of both basin and reservoirs.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Geoscience is the study of the Earth — how it works, what lies beneath its surface, how its resources are formed and how natural processes shape our environment. It brings together geology, geophysics, data, technology and field observation to understand and solve real-world Earth-related challenges.

You will learn how to investigate the Earth, interpret geological and subsurface data, conduct fieldwork and apply technology to real-world problems. You will explore Energy Geoscience, Strategic Minerals, Geohazards and Earth Resources, while developing skills in AI, data analytics, geospatial technology and industry-standard software.

A Geoscience degree can take you across a wide range of industries and career pathways. Graduates can work in energy and resources, minerals and mining, environmental and sustainability, geospatial and mapping, engineering and infrastructure, consulting, technology and data, government and regulatory agencies, research and academia, as well as pursue further specialisation through postgraduate study.
