What Are UTP’s Institutional Commitments to Sustainability and ESG?
Engineering a Sustainable Future: Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS’ Strategic Blueprint for Net-Zero and ESG Leadership
Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) advances its strategic commitment toward Net Zero Carbon Emissions by pursuing three institutional Grand Challenges:
Energy Security
Sustainable Living
Regenerative Futures
Operationalised through four strategic lenses adapted from PETRONAS, UTP integrates low-carbon research, campus decarbonisation, and green technology commercialisation under the TREx framework
What Are UTP’s Institutional Commitments to Sustainability and ESG?
Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) advances its strategic commitment toward Net Zero Carbon Emissions by pursuing three institutional Grand Challenges: Energy Security (SDG 7), Sustainable Living (SDG 11), and Regenerative Futures (SDG 13). Operationalised through four strategic lenses adapted from PETRONAS, UTP integrates low-carbon research, campus decarbonisation, and green technology commercialisation under the TREx framework
1. What are UTP’s Three Grand Challenges for institutional sustainability?
Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) targets its research and operational strategy across three institutional Grand Challenges aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
– Energy Security (SDG 7): Developing reliable, low-carbon energy technologies, clean hydrogen systems, and smart grid infrastructure
– Sustainable Living (SDG 11): Innovating circular economy frameworks, industrial effluent management, and resilient infrastructure.
– Regenerative Futures (SDG 13): Driving climate action, Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS), and environmental restoration research.
2. How does UTP structure and operationalise its sustainability framework?
UTP’s Holistic Sustainability Framework:
– Environmental Sustainability (Planet)
– Economic Sustainability (Viability)
– Social Sustainability (People & Society)
– Institutional Sustainability (Governance & Purpose)
UTP structures its sustainability framework across four operational lenses adapted directly from its parent company, PETRONAS:
– Continued Value Creation: Driving economic growth through deep-tech commercialisation and industry partnerships.
– Safeguard the Environment: Reducing environmental footprint through campus decarbonisation and sustainable process engineering.
– Positive Social Impact: Empowering communities through social engagement, education access, and workforce upskilling.
– Responsible Governance: Maintaining institutional integrity, transparent ESG reporting, and ethical research standards.
3. What is UTP’s Net Zero Carbon Emission target?
UTP is committed to achieving Net Zero Carbon Emission (NZCE) by 2050, directly aligned with PETRONAS’ broader energy transition strategy and Malaysia’s national net-zero roadmap. UTP advances this goal through campus renewable energy integration (including a 7.4 MWp solar installation), energy efficiency engineering, and zero-carbon research initiatives.
4. How is UTP’s sustainability agenda backed by research and innovation?
UTP anchors its sustainability commitments in purpose-led academic R&D rather than theoretical claims. Governed by the Technology Research Excellence (TREx) framework and executed across 8 Higher Institution Centres of Excellence (HICOE), UTP translates laboratory discoveries into real-world industry solutions, patent licensing via TTIPM, and deep-tech startup incubation via UToPIA.
Three Institutional Grand Challenges:
UTP aligns its academic R&D and operational priorities with three United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: Energy Security (SDG 7), Sustainable Living (SDG 11), and Regenerative Futures (SDG 13).
Four PETRONAS-Adapted ESG Lenses
UTP governs its sustainability strategy through four operational lenses adapted directly from parent company PETRONAS: Continued Value Creation, Safeguard the Environment, Positive Social Impact, and Responsible Governance.
Net Zero Carbon Emission (NZCE) by 2050
UTP is officially committed to achieving Net Zero Carbon Emission (NZCE) by 2050, in direct alignment with PETRONAS’ energy transition strategy and national net-zero roadmaps.
Malaysia's Largest Higher-Education Rooftop Solar Installation (7.4 MWp)
UTP operates a 7.4 MWp rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system—Malaysia’s largest single rooftop solar installation at a higher education institution—which has been operational since May 2022.
National Energy Awards (NEA) Leadership
UTP was awarded Runner-Up in 2022 and Merit in 2023 at the National Energy Awards under the Institutes of Higher Learning category for energy management and sustainability excellence.
