Who is this programme for?

Designed for engineering graduates and practising engineers seeking advanced expertise in industrial environmental management, including water, air and solid-waste management, pollution prevention and sustainable engineering solutions.

What will I learn, year by year?

Year 1: Build foundations in biological wastewater treatment, sludge management, hazardous waste, physical-chemical treatment, renewable energy and air-pollution control. Year 2: Develop specialisation through Environmental Management or Pollution Prevention electives and undertake Research Project I. Final stage: Complete Research Project II, applying environmental engineering methods to a research or industry problem.

Where do graduates work? Name employers and roles (≤60 words)

Graduates can pursue careers in environmental engineering, environmental management, pollution control, sustainability, waste management, water/wastewater treatment and environmental consulting across industry, government agencies, consultancies and other organisations requiring environmental expertise. UTP also identifies academics, government representatives, industry practitioners and consultants among relevant professional pathways.

One thing that makes it different at UTP

UTP describes this as the only MSc in Malaysia focused specifically on Industrial Environmental Engineering, combining environmental management with pollution prevention, renewable energy, treatment technologies and circular-economy approaches.

The Research Behind It: Which area, centre and academics?

Research is centred on Water & Environment, environmental engineering, water quality, wastewater treatment, waste management, hydrological modelling and sustainability within the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. The department's Water & Environment cluster includes Ts Dr Husna Takaijudin; Assoc Prof Dr Muhammad Raza Ul Mustafa researches hydrological modelling, water quality, sediment transport and soil erosion. Salmaliza Salleh is a member of UTP's Centre for Urban Resources Sustainability (CURES).

Cost & Funding: Which scholarships and aid apply to this programme?

UTP's Graduate Assistantship (GA) is stated to be for full-time PhD research students only, so it does not apply to this programmework master's. Eligible Malaysian students may explore EPF withdrawal and external sponsorship/loan options.

Student Life: What should an applicant to this programme know?

The programme is 100% online, using self-instructional materials with at least 8 hours of live online classes per programme per semester. Classes are flexible and final examinations are conducted online as open-book exams.
