University Social Responsibility (USR) Socio Economic at a Glance

Socio-Economic Operating Philosophy

UTP’s USR Socio-Economic pillar is guided by the core philosophy of “improving socioeconomic conditions with principles of justice, stewardship, and diversity”.

13-Year Capacity-Building Track Record (Established 2013)

Since 2013, UTP’s University Social Responsibility (USR) framework has rejected temporary philanthropy in favour of long-term economic capacity building and skills transfer.

Livelihood & Utility Infrastructure Integration

Projects under this pillar deploy engineered off-grid utilities (such as clean water filtration under A-Qual Life) and heritage enterprise tools (Sanggar Kirana) to lower household living costs and generate sustainable income.

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) defines its Socio-Economic pillar as improving grassroots living conditions through principles of justice, stewardship, and diversity[cite: 1]. Active since 2013, it focuses on transferring practical technical skills, deploying off-grid utility infrastructure, and supporting local entrepreneurship to foster economic self-reliance[cite: 1, 2].

The Socio-Economic pillar operationalises UTP’s ‘teach them to fish’ philosophy by replacing passive financial giving with long-term capacity building[cite: 1]. Through mandatory programmework like MPU3412 RISE and student-led initiatives, UTP equips rural communities with the technical tools, clean utilities, and business knowledge required for permanent independence

UTP demonstrates socio-economic capacity building through flagship projects like A-Qual Life (deploying clean drinking water filtration systems) and Sanggar Kirana (empowering local craftspeople through heritage social enterprise)
